A Massacre in Las Vegas
Last night, Sunday, October 1st, during the Harvest Festival in Las Vegas pandemonium broke out. Shots were fired from what sounds like an automatic weapon. They fired into a crowd of men and women attending the concert. Rounds bursting and seeming to never stop. During something like this moments can seem like many minutes. I can’t imagine what was going through the minds of those who were injured as they watched chaos break out around them in all directions. Many today will pray who haven’t prayed in a long time. Many will reach out to God and family for comfort. And as we continue to witness reports of what went on we stand by and wonder why. What would possess a man to do these things; to take the lives of many. How could it come to this?
Why did he do it?
Why do people keep doing things like this? Some claim to be doing it in honor to a god. Some were troubled children who were the victims of continual sin against them without the foundation of Gospel truth and faith to process the struggle. And there are others who have simply embraced evil and enjoy and long to take life.
No one knows at this point what this man was thinking or what the reason for this act was. Though life choices, pain, struggles, bad decisions, beliefs, and many other items affect the creation of massacre, there is a simpler answer. There will be many ideas. There will soon be hundreds of speculative citizens. I’m currently watching the Fox News live coverage on YouTube and as I watch the live stream of comments from other watchers. There is already a lot of blame being thrown on Hillary Clinton, former President Obama, lack of gun control, too much gun control. There are already many people commenting and quarreling about it. All of those assumptions and reasons are wrong or at the very least, incomplete.
The True Reason this Happens
Jeremiah 17:9-10 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.
Luke 6:45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks
Genesis 8:21 And when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done.
Genesis 6:5 The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
You see…sin is the problem. None of us are good by nature. Put people in a nation alone and watch what happens. We quarrel. We become racist on every side and blame the other. We riot and call it protesting. We pollute sex, marriage, fatherhood, motherhood, brotherhood, and every other hood. We look to our own agendas, feelings, and assumptions. We become our own gods. We hate those who kneel during the national anthem. We hate those who stand. The problem is not the other guy. It’s all of us.
Put my two boys in a room for too long and someone runs upstairs crying or mad. Just this morning my youngest son told me he wished I wasn’t his daddy because I made him obey his mom and brush his teeth. Lol. That’s who we are. Adults aren’t really any more mature than that. We’ve simply gotten better at justifying and disguising our selfishness and self-worship.
There’s chaos everywhere because some entertainers knelt during our nations anthem. Now hear me…I’m a Marine Veteran. I’ve been to Afghanistan. I know men who’ve died. And I will tell you that we worship ourselves, Football, and America much more than we worship the God who created and made all of it possible.
How long will we continue to say we believe in God without obeying him? How long will we defend our own interests while ignorantly not seeing both sides and, more importantly, while not looking at humanity and one another as God sees us? How many people have to die before we turn back to God? How much chaos has to happen before we begin to see that all of the items we fight about and disagree with are simply symptoms of the greater problem?
I love having “In God We Trust” on our money and in our pledge. But why have it there if we don’t trust or even know God? How can we stand for the anthem and put our hands over our darkened hearts? The beauty of America is the freedom we all have. Freedom. Freedom to love, honor, and bring glory to God; and freedom to self-indulge, engage in selfish quarrels, and hate. We have freedom that has been given to us by God through wars, blood, sweat, and many tears. And he’s given us this freedom in America so that we would be an image of the freedom that can only be found in Christ Jesus. We do not have freedom for any other purpose. And like every other area in life and any super power in human history, we’re squandering that freedom. We’re polluting it and twisting it to mean freedom to do whatever I want, to take whatever I want, to be whoever I want, to believe whatever I want. That’s not a freedom that is American. It is a freedom that every human has everywhere. Do whatever you want.
The freedom we have is not freedom to do whatever a person wants, it is the freedom to do what a person ought.
So, why, you ask, did this man do this horrific thing? He did it for the same reason we cheat in our marriages, lie on Facebook so people won’t know our true struggles, abuse children, abort babies, and fight about things that are unimportant.
It doesn’t need to be this way. YOU don’t have to be this way. Turn from selfishness and pain and embrace Jesus. Repent and turn to obedience of Christ. Know and acknowledge your Creator. “Go and sin no more.” Stop being mad at God. He only wants you to brush your teeth.
